This is a problem that plagues a lot of windows 10 machines, but can also affect windows 8, 8.1, even windows 7 and Vista Operating systems.
This is a known issue with many causes. The following solution is a simple workaround. I wish I could claim this as my own, but I found it on page 12 of a windows help page, but it worked for me, and figured it would help to give it its own page.
The following instructions are for Windows 10:
The fix that worked for me was to go into your power & sleep settings > Additional power settings > Choose what closing the lid does > click on “Change settings that are currently unavailable” > un-check the box that says “Tun on fast startup (recommended)”.
Close everything and reboot.
That’s it. You’ll still see it showing up in your task manager, but it should be consuming significantly less resources than it was before.
